Packing large mirrors and delicate glassware safely requires a layer-by-layer approach to absorb shock and prevent movement inside boxes.
Part 1: How to Pack Large Mirrors & Flat Glass
1. Apply Painter’s Tape
- Apply low-adhesive painter’s tape across the glass face in a large “X” pattern.
- Why: Tape doesn’t prevent glass from cracking, but if an accident occurs, it holds shards together so they don’t shatter everywhere. Avoid duct tape or heavy packing tape directly on glass, as they leave sticky residues.
2. Add Surface and Edge Protection
- Surface: Cover the glass face with glassine paper, packing paper, or a microfiber cloth to prevent surface scratching. Then wrap the entire mirror generously in bubble wrap (bubble-side facing outward).
- Edges: Mirror corners break first. Slip cardboard corner protectors or slit foam pipe insulation onto all four corners. Wrap a moving blanket over the entire assembly and secure it with stretch wrap.
3. Box in a Telescoping Mirror Carton
- Slide the wrapped mirror into a picture/mirror box (a two-piece telescoping box designed for large flat items).
- Fill empty internal gaps with crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap until there is zero wiggle room.
4. Transportation Rule (Crucial)
- Transport upright: Always stand mirrors vertically on their side edge inside the truck. Never lay a mirror flat. Road vibrations will cause flat glass to flex and shatter under its own weight.
- Sanding the mirror upright between flat, soft items (like a mattress or sofa side) prevents tipping.
Part 2: How to Pack Delicate Glassware & Stemware
1. Prep the Box
- Use heavy-duty, double-walled dish barrel boxes or cell-divider boxes.
- Create a 2-to-3-inch shock-absorbing “crumple zone” at the bottom of the box using heavily crumpled packing paper.
2. Wrap Every Piece Individually
- Wine Glasses & Stemware: Stuff the hollow bowl with crumpled paper first to support internal structure. Wrap the stem in bubble wrap, then wrap the entire glass in 2–3 sheets of plain packing paper. (Avoid newspaper, as wet ink transfers to glass).
- Tumblers & Bowls: Roll the glass diagonally inside packing paper, tucking the paper ends into the open cavity as you roll.
3. Load Vertically & Layer
- Stand glasses upright: Always place glassware standing up on its base inside the box—never lay glasses sideways.
- Put heavier glassware (mugs, thick bowls) at the bottom layer, followed by a cardboard divider or flat paper cushion, and put lighter stemware on top.
4. Eliminate Movement & Label
- Fill all remaining pockets and top clearance spaces with crumpled paper. Close the box and gently shake it—if you feel anything shifting, add more paper padding.
- Seal securely with heavy-duty packing tape and clearly mark all sides with “FRAGILE – GLASSWARE – THIS SIDE UP” arrows.
